All in the <head> – Ponderings and code by Drew McLellan –

Alternative and Punk

According to iTunes, nearly all of my music collection is Alternative & Punk. I have no idea why, as the range of music I listen to tends to be fairly wide. All I can think is that the Alternative & Punk genre has become some sort of catch-all for anything that doesn’t fit neatly into one of the CDDBs very narrow categories. This really highlights how important good classification systems are. The fact that I have to store Funk under Jazz and Ska under Reggae means that I’m going to have a hard time finding the music I’m looking for. Classify something badly, and you might as well have not classified it at all.

And how the heck did the classic Barenaked Ladies album Stunt get filed under Folk?
