Welcome to Teletubbie Land

So I made the switch. Following sucessful flirtations with Windows XP and the installation of a new domain controller, I took the plunge and upgraded my main workstation to Windows XP. Welcome to Teletubbie Land. I’m currently downloading about a squillion megabytes of service packs, security patches and ‘critical’ media players. There seems to be more patches to the operating system than there is operating system. Such is life.

Thankfully, it went a little smoother for me than it did for Mark.

NO! You should stop right now, shake your head, pull out that credit card, and get yourself a Mac. While everyone was going nuts about viruses.. .i was laughing.. well everyone has to watch their email, careful what they open, someone might take control of my computer.. .I am still laughing..

I got a developers release of X.3.. now I am excited. Kills XP and has less bugs in pre-release.

...actually XP is OK, I like in my second monitor running on Virtual PC where I can crash it and not care. Would never be able to work on it though or keep up with the daily patchings. Plus Unix.. oh how I have come to love Unix...
§ Drew: Jesse, I agree 100%. I can pull out my credit card any time I like, but the reality is I’d have to pay it back ...

(In fact, there’s nothing I’d love more than to pull out my credit card and by a Mac!)
§ Jesse: hehe.. ya i figured as much. If my office wasn’t a Mac shop i don’t think I could afford a Mac.. But I think that will be a requirement for future employers - must provide a Mac ;)

Has ANYONE who has EVER accused XP of being tellytubby-like even rightclicked the desktop, chose properties, clicked the appearance tab and chose Silver (Grey?) under Color schemes?

Bam. Now it looks smooth instead.
§ Drew: Yes, me. I used to have my computer at work set to the Silver version (for more than a year). It was just the same, but less blue.

The Teletubbie thing mostly comes from the default background image, I think ;-)

The teletubbies background is only missing the little rabbits :-D
§ jixor: Get custom theme asap. I mostly get custom themes from deviantart under ’visual styles’ (I think thats where they are).

About Drew McLellan

Drew McLellan (@drewm) has been hacking on the web since around 1996 following an unfortunate incident with a margarine tub. Since then he’s spread himself between both front- and back-end development projects, and now is Director and Senior Web Developer at edgeofmyseat.com in Maidenhead, UK (GEO: 51.5217, -0.7177). Prior to this, Drew was a Web Developer for Yahoo!, and before that primarily worked as a technical lead within design and branding agencies for clients such as Nissan, Goodyear Dunlop, Siemens/Bosch, Cadburys, ICI Dulux and Virgin.net. Somewhere along the way, Drew managed to get himself embroiled with Dreamweaver and was made an early Macromedia Evangelist for that product. This lead to book deals, public appearances, fame, glory, and his eventual downfall.

Picking himself up again, Drew is now a strong advocate for best practises, and stood as Group Lead for The Web Standards Project 2006-08. He has had articles published by A List Apart, Adobe, and O’Reilly Media’s XML.com, mostly due to mistaken identity. Drew is a proponent of the lower-case semantic web, and is currently expending energies in the direction of the microformats movement, with particular interests in making parsers an off-the-shelf commodity and developing simple UI conventions. He writes here at all in the head and, with a little help from his friends, at 24 ways.
