About Drew McLellan

Photo of Drew McLellan

Drew McLellan has been hacking on the web since around 1996 following an unfortunate incident with a margarine tub. Since then he’s spread himself between both front- and back-end development projects, and now is Director and Senior Web Developer at edgeofmyseat.com in Maidenhead, UK (GEO: 51.5217, -0.7177). Prior to this, Drew was a Web Developer for Yahoo!, and before that primarily worked as a technical lead within design and branding agencies for clients such as Nissan, Goodyear Dunlop, Siemens/Bosch, Caburys, ICI Dulux and Virgin.net. Somewhere along the way, Drew managed to get himself embroiled with Dreamweaver and was made an early Macromedia Evangelist for that product. This lead to book deals, public appearances, fame, glory, and his eventual downfall.

Picking himself up again, Drew is now a strong advocate for best practises, and is currently Group Lead for The Web Standards Project. He has had articles published by A List Apart, Adobe, and O’Reilly Media’s XML.com, mostly due to mistaken identity. Drew is a proponent of the lower-case semantic web, and is currently expending energies in the direction of the microformats movement, with particular interests in making parsers an off-the-shelf commodity and developing simple UI conventions. He writes here at all in the head and, with a little help from his friends, at 24 ways.

London Web Week

5 April 2008

London Web Week Announced this week was an initiative called London Web Week, which will run from May 26th to June 2th this summer. It encompasses existing events like @media 2008 and BarCamp London 4 whilst providing a framework for other related geek events to be laid on.

As part of LWW Frances Berriman and I are putting on a Microformats vEvent on Tuesday 27th May from 7pm. Dan Brickley (co-founder of FOAF) and Tom Morris (founder of Get Semantic) are each giving a presentation as part of what we hope will be a more broadly themed semantic web event. The rest of the evening is purely social, with the chance to mingle and chat with like-minded folks. Everyone is welcome, whatever your level of understanding of microformats, RDF, GRDDL etc. is. We hope that no matter your experience level, you’ll find the evening informative, enjoyable and inspiring. Tickets are just £5, and must be booked in advance online from the above link.

Also happening as part of LWW is a Web Standards Group meeting (which have been excellent in the past) and an event called Web Roots aimed at those aiming to break into the industry. Keep an eye on the LWW site for more.

Not forgetting @media on the Thursday and Friday (still my favourite ‘formal’ web conference, and massively recommended) it looks like London Web Week is really shaping up to be an exciting event, and one well worth supporting.
